weekFAN49_2006-11-27
I would like to start this week with a image of my tracks in basel so far.
I started recording my trips around one month ago, somewhere in october, soon after I arrived here.
as already in the london image it shows clearly strong connections between, to me, important locations.
as one has to know the main mode of transport for me at the moment is walking the scale is very different.
everything here is in walking distance [whatever this means].
again, the river is even here in this small scale a very strong separation line. there are still very few crossings despite the fact everything is so close together.
on the top left corner one can spot the airport, and in the center there is the main train station.
in international terms there is france in the top left quarter and germany in the top right quarter of the image.
in terms of interconnection to JLF the flight to bogota takes about 21h and goes via paris, london, or amsterdam and the USA.
the connection to london is about three times a day and takes 1h30.
in historical terms one can even or especially on the birds view see clearly the growth structure. from the medieval town and the arriving of the railway and the industrialization, the introduction of the highways and the growth and changes in recent times.
economy and industry is mainly about pharmaceuticals and banking. a lot of international companies have headquarters here or some operational bases. the rest is service. there is not real industry anymore, maybe it never happened on a large scale.
I would like to pick up on your report topic knowledge and education and my topic of cycles tomorrow

Basel seems to be very different from Bogota in terms of transportation, eventhough people in Bogota walk a lot the main method of transportation is car, or public transport, the two cities will create good materila for discussion, I do want to know how the people react to projects like Novartis, it seems that Basel is a fairly small traditional city and in my opinion projectsof such magnitude don't seem quite right, what is the people opinion?
